What training is necessary for FSSC 22000

Implementing a formal food safety management system like FSSC 22000 or BRC will require new skills and knowledge about the requirements of the standards and how to interpret and implement these requirements.

If you are the food safety team leader then you should consider these training courses:

  1. Introduction to pre-requisite programmes and the relevant standard such as ISO T/S 22002 part 1-6 depending on which sector of the food industry you are in.
  2. Introduction and implementation of ISO 22000:2018 – this course should be an indepth level training programme where you will be taught how to document and implement the requirement. Trust me a 1 day programme will not cut it.
  3. If you have had no prior HACCP experience then an introduction to HACCP principles will be helpful BEFORE you tackle ISO 22000.
  4. FSSC 22000 has additional requirements and so you should get some training on these extra aspects which are important programmes for managing food fraud and food defence and more.
  5. As the team leader you will probably be involved with conducting food safety audits, so get yourself onto a internal auditing course.
  6. You may also want to consider some soft skills training like conflict management, negotiations etc depending on your personality and the team dynamic. Much of implementing a food safety management system is getting a team to buy into food safety and drive a new set of requirements. This takes assertiveness and persuasion. Trust me just because you have the word leader in your title does not make you a leader. If you want to be successful it is about how you treat this team and win them over to work with you. Banging on the table will be a certain sign of failure.

NOTE: What training do you need to implement HACCP SANS 10330

You will need the same basic programme but replace the ISO 22000 training with training on SANS 10330:2020.

The PRP training will be done against SANS 10049:2019, our national standard for PRP’s.
