The Course in Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) will provide you with knowledge on what food and nutrition security is, why it matters and the impact on policies and programmes adopted to fight hunger and malnutrition. Achieving nutrition and food security globally is a complex and multi-faceted challenge, which requires novel approaches, evidence, and
new policy and institutional enabling environments. The shift is to broaden the agricultural focus in Africa from aiming to attain food security, to incorporating nutritional security.
The unique offering of this course is the comprehensive digitally enabled food and livelihood collection system as a valuable tool and method to analyse and assess food security.
This course covers the interlinkages between food, nutrition, agri-food systems and food policies, and the importance of adopting a multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach.


Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:
• Understand food and nutrition security concepts and complexity
• Apply food security indicators evaluation methods
• Learn about the objective tree logical framework approaches to food and nutrition security programmes
• Map a basic value chain and understand the value of the commercialisation of value chains
• Using consumer behaviour as a tool to create more sustainable food systems
• Understand the tools and methods used to analyse food security
• Carry out an assessment of household food security
• Understand the policies associated with food and nutrition security
• Contribute to building capacity required across research and policy to tackle this multi-faceted challenge, and
help avoid the policy paralysis which in some countries led to little or no progress towards addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)


Prerequisites

To be eligible for the Course in Food and Nutrition Security, candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Epidemiology, Food or Agricultural Science and Economics, or any related field. However, professionals who are working in the field and do not possess the aforementioned qualifications are also encouraged to apply. Interested applicants who do not meet the prerequisite qualifications are required to submit their CV for consideration.
